The change-makers win awards, but in the long run, everything remains the same and their struggle remains the same, referring specifically to this issue of world peace.
This leads me to meet the people who are trying to make the degree of humanity something viable for all of us as humans, there are the change-makers, those who fight from their own intellectual and scientific trenches in favour of, in this case, disarmament.
The issue is obvious and there are quite a few academics with a voice and vote who are delving into the matter and aiming to undertake the long journey towards disarmament, a process that is complex as it is crucial to ensure peace in an increasingly unstable world. We point out, for example, that today I discover in the virtual news the development of new initiatives and proposals that seek to promote dialogue between nations and reduce dependence on weapons. The growing concern about armed conflicts and their consequences has led a significant number of experts to join this movement, proposing viable and sustainable alternatives that prioritize diplomacy and international cooperation.
For example, the AIMPGN, whose acronym stands for: International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War defines itself as an independent federation of national medical organizations from 58 countries, representing tens of thousands of physicians, medical students, healthcare workers and citizens committed to the common goal of creating a safer and more peaceful world free from the threat of nuclear annihilation.
“The Federation of American Scientists estimates that there are currently 12,000 nuclear warheads, of which 2,000 are on high alert; That is, ready to be detonated in 60 seconds,» Carlos Umaña, who currently serves as co-president of this Association and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985, recently stated in an international digital newspaper that:
Unlike the First and Second World Wars, which lasted four and six years respectively, and ended with the detonation of weapons in a large-scale nuclear war that took only 72 minutes and warned of the possibility of a conflict of this type surprising humanity, the professional dedicates all his efforts to a single purpose: Total disarmament.
This professional is also a member of the board of directors of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, the organization that won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
I wonder what is the point of giving out million-dollar prizes in favor of vital rights for humanity if, over the years, they are just that, prizes and money used for campaigns that are ultimately ineffective, of course referring in particular to the Nobel Peace Prize.
The current amount is 11 million Swedish crowns, the equivalent in dollars of which is one million and is awarded for each full Nobel Prize. A Nobel Prize can be awarded to a maximum of three laureates who will share the prize money.
Carlos Umaña will be making his case in November of this year and tells the newspaper I mentioned the following: «The end of the Cold War would have been the opportune moment to give way to nuclear disarmament, but these became a status symbol between the powers. Since then, tensions have only increased, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine being one of the most critical points. In August of this year alone, the UN reported that security at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant had deteriorated after an explosion caused by a drone in the vicinity.»
It is ironic, but what good will it do Russia to gain an area of land rendered useless by nuclear contamination, should this happen, whether it wins the war or wins it with a nuclear disaster added to its triumphs?
