Well, let’s go step by step. The world has created a kind of concentric circles similar to those that Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy contemplates in his work:
As an agnostic, I will give a different treatment to the description that the search engine has provided me:
First Circle (Limbo): Here are the souls of those who were not baptized and the virtuous pagans. They do not suffer torment, but they are eternally separated from God.
In the analysis of the social issue that interests me, let’s say the following:
In this circle are the people who live what they have in front of them, comply with the requirements imposed on them, attend ceremonies out of custom, also the celebrations without contradicting or analyzing the reasons, they are simply part of it, they study what corresponds to them by generational right and they marry the person who also corresponds to them by status. It is easy and comfortable, but sometimes it is like surfing the wave, you have to maintain and preserve the balance.
Second Circle: This circle is reserved for the lustful, who are punished by being dragged along by an eternal storm
Let’s look at this aspect from the point of view of desire, what we like because it incites our desire to look better, to buy the designer clothes that attract us, the shoes that the elite make stand out, the car that attracts the glances of the opposite sex and the unique style that makes us desirable with the sex chosen for flirting and conquest.
Third Circle: Here are the gluttons, who are punished with a constant rain of hail, mud and snow.
This is very interesting, I translate it as all those who consume without importing and their house is crammed with things, little details, paintings, shoes by the dozens… There is a more exclusive group, those who collect paintings, luxury cars, houses, and chalets, what Dante says at the end is interesting, they all depend on not having their active accounts frozen.
Fourth Circle: In this circle are the misers and the spenders, who are condemned to push great weights in opposite circles.
The speculators, those who are capable of throwing tons of grains or seeds into the sea to increase their cost in the face of the law of supply and demand; also, those who make deals for economic protection, legislate to favour certain social strata and governments with similar or not so similar policies, many times they are subdued by permits or tariff prohibitions.
Fifth Circle: This circle houses the wrathful and the lazy, who are submerged in the river Styx, fighting each other.
The groups that in some countries live off the budget allocated to the unemployed, the so-called basic economic protection budget that depends on the laws of the different countries, are not all lazy, many are destitute and have to make do with the aid of non-governmental organizations, the term “Feeling drowned up to the neck” regardless of the river that Dante points to…
Sixth Circle: Here are the heretics, who are punished in burning graves.
This is interesting, the punishment for those who have no respect for their beliefs, there are certainly many problems that come from beliefs, the flames are wars, let’s start with the holy war, too much death and destruction, we also see Islamic fundamentalists interested in setting fire to the areas where the infidels live…
Many theological beliefs have separated the world for thousands of years and it is enough to look around… We do not have to travel to medieval times.
Seventh Circle: This circle is divided into three rings and houses those who are violent against others, against themselves (suicidal) and against God (blasphemers), nature and art.
Curiously, nature and art are mentioned in this circle, they have undoubtedly shaped our nature, indicating that we must be aggressive to defend what belongs to us, in the part that mentions art, let us see an example, the box office success of war movies, of western cowboys, of the killing of native Indians. Also, those who constantly make an apology for violence and the more blood and bullets there are, they are happy, splashing the cameraman with extreme violence, which translates into a millionaire box office…
On the other hand, there is the culture of depression that sustains civilization and the bullying attacks, making us feel that we are not capable of surviving under the demands that the world sustains and there is suicide; changing the paradigm is imperative and complex.
Eighth Circle: This circle is divided into ten pits, each one with different types of frauds, such as seducers, flatterers, simoniacs, fortune tellers, and counterfeiters, among others.
The culture where they make you believe that your life can be different if you believe the witch who reads your hand, the one who tells you that you are beautiful or handsome because he or she needs to obtain resources from you, is his or her job as a flatterer, the one who counterfeits money to live in a status that he or she would not have if he or she obtained it with his or her legitimate work. We could also talk about drug cartels, they sell substances at millionaire prices to circles that need an extra stimulus to dress appropriately as predators, they debase the lives of people who in other circumstances would have had ordinary lives and simple jobs but who are attracted by the money they can mobilize to be the ones who empower themselves in circles where the figure of the Alpha male or female is coveted.
The last one that Dante mentions is the Ninth Circle: The deepest circle of hell, reserved for traitors. It is divided into four zones, each with different types of betrayal, and in the centre is Satan.
If betrayal of values, statutes, and societies is found in this space, it would be good to remember that it is what is known as the devil, we must go to its cultural archetype where we see the one who ties without it being necessary to remain tied, the one who shows desire and wealth without you necessarily having to consider it imperative, but you do it, the one who classifies you on a scale of values where you must fit in, without it being necessary… But you do it.
The figure with which you have been scared in childhood so that you obey and his flames are the way you burn in every activity that society disapproves of, therefore, that place suits the devil well in the novel by the famous author.
